Professional Standards for School Leaders

School Leaders’ Professional Standards
School leadership

Good quality professional leadership can transform a school and ensure that it becomes and continues to be a centre of quality learning, with the Head Teacher in the pivotal central role.  Many aspects can influence the school’s performance, the prime factors being the quality of teaching and standard of school leadership.

It is difficult to find a successful school with a bad leader. Conversely, most failing schools require a good leader to inspire, motivate and transform them to improve their performance. For a consistent high level of quality education in all Rwandan Primary and secondary schools, we should strive to ensure that every school has a capable school leader to guide the school forward. The Head Teacher’s Professional Standards are an array of indicators to develop and maintain quality school leadership and management within schools, thus improving learning outcomes for students. The standards reflect a commitment to ensure that all students have an opportunity to access quality learning and that all schools are administered, managed and led in a consistent way by competent professionals. Providing high quality education to students is the essential for the future development of our country.

  10. Considering where we have come from since 1994, we are doing pretty well in education. But a lot more will have to be done. More training for school leaders will be needed.
